What is WordPress?

WordPress started as a blogging platform and now powers over 14% of the websites on the entire internet! Recently WordPress has been developed into a fully fledged content management system with ease of use and extensibility in mind. Perfect for use by individuals, small businesses and big businesses alike.

We’re not kidding about the big business part either. WordPress has been adopted as platform of choice for some leading brand names from Ford to the BBC.

Want to know more?

No problem. Below are a list of questions we regularly help our clients answer.

Where should I host WordPress for best SEO results?

WordPress or any other content management system should be hosted on a server which is geographically close to your target market. For example, if you’re a UK company and want to target the UK we recommend you get UK based web hosting, preferably a UK based WordPress Host.

There are obviously further considerations to make if you’re targeting more than one country. Talk to us if you’d like to discuss your situation in detail.

How do I ensure my WordPress pages load fast?

The first step is to determine why your WordPress pages are loading slowly in the first place. There are a number of potential culprits that lead to slow loading of pages. The most common ones are:

1) Large images on your pages

If the images on your site are large in size, they will cause the pages they are placed on to load slowly. This can apply to images used to make up your theme, or within the post. An easy check would be to remove the images from your pages to see if that improves load time.

2) Scripts and embeds from third party sites

Embedded content from third party sites like facebook and flickr, could cause your site to load slowly whilst waiting for a response from external servers. Again, the quick check is to remove the content.

3) Large CSS and Javascript files.

Depending on the functionality on your page, you may import large CSS or Javascript files. A solution would be to streamline these files by removing unused code, or badly written code. In addition it may be possible to compress (minify) the files to cut down on loading times.

The above list is by no means comprehensive or a complete list of issues and solutions. If your site is running slow, contact us now to see how we can help.

What strategy should I follow when blogging to help my search rankings?
