Recently thoughts in the RX Host offices have been focused with backing up data. Now it’s natural that we have a lot of files as a result of work for our clients, so disaster on our computers would be terrible! So what do we do? Well, we have external hard drives…that’s a start. Whilst external hard drives aren’t the only or the best way of backing up data, at least we have a back up. Besides, all the files that matter are on the server working as intended anyway. The odds of computer failure in office and server failure simultaneously are pretty low right? I sure hope so.
On top of the data I have stored, I’d hate to wake up in the morning to a flurry of emails from clients saying their websites are “gone” only to find there was no way of getting them back as the server blew up. That would suck. Whilst we provide regular backups of the server anyway, maybe it’s a good idea to educate and encourage clients to back up their own sites. If you have any thoughts on this please do leave a comment!
I mean, a lot of the sites we create are based on the wordpress platform, so services like backupify should help clients store at least 2GB of their website, should the worst happen.
I’m even toying with the idea of getting myself a dropbox, but I’m still a bit hesitant about putting all my trust in the cloud…especially when I’m travelling and might not be able to get on the internet.
I’d really love to know how you deal with back ups, and if you don’t, why not?
